Lifeguarding Class as High School Elective
In this time of lifeguard shortages, we need to look to our future and they always say, “kids are our future”. We had one of our NIHCA Networking members ask if there are facilities who partnered with the local school to offer lifeguarding as an elective for the high school students. We want to start by saying, what a great out-of-the-box way to think! There are multiple facilities that work with local schools to offer swimming time and even swimming lessons for elementary students. Partnering with the high school to offer a lifeguarding elective to students could be a benefit for the youth and the facility.
There are two requirements that need to be addressed:
- State standards in Physical Education. HERE is the link for Minnesota
- State Lifeguard requirements. HERE is the link to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding
Reach out to the High School Principal to start a conversation about partnering with a HS Credit course through your facility.
