Open Swim Options With A Lack of Lifeguards
We continue to hear questions from our members regarding the lack of lifeguard availability. The shortage in lifeguards has led to limited pool hours, pool closings, and creative thinking.
The data we gathered from the NIHCA Networking group is that there are three viable options;
- Open swim only when a lifeguard is on duty; pool closed when a lifeguard is not on duty
- Open swim available; children must be accompanied by an adult when a lifeguard is not on duty
- Lap swim for ages 18 and up only; no children allowed and no lifeguard on duty
Of course there are pros and cons to each option. We always recommend having a policy in writing. Even if you have lifeguards available, there should be a policy about the pool availability when a lifeguard is not on duty.
